With the growing number of manufacturing units across the globe, there is an impending need for professionals to fit into the role of production engineer and assume responsibilities of production management. The role of a production engineer is not restricted to one area in the industry but rather blends in at each and every step of product manufacturing.

Production Engineering is a relatively new engineering discipline. It is a combination of manufacturing technology with mechanical knowledge and designing. Production Engineering involves design, control, and continuous improvement of integrated systems in order to provide customers high quality goods and services in a timely and cost-effective manner. Production engineering also overlaps substantially with manufacturing engineering and industrial engineering.

A production Engineer is responsible for different areas in a factory setup. Firstly he has to look into the design of the product, its quality and feasibility. After the product design is finalized he has to look after the manufacturing process. A production Engineer is required to calculate the yield and cost effectiveness of the manufacturing process. Other duties involve timely improvement of production techniques, incorporating quality all along the manufacturing process and tackling any hurdles faced during production.

Major skills that a production engineer is required to possess are technical skills, people skills, communication skills, knowledge of labour laws and presence of mind to tackle any hurdles faced during the manufacturing process.

Scope

Production engineers find ample job opportunities in manufacturing companies. They can also be recruited in several other organizations like banks, hospitals, agriculture, public utilities, transportation, construction and government. Both public and private sectors require production engineers for the smooth functioning of manufacturing industry and automation units. With higher degree and experience, one can get top position in the company with attractive remuneration.
